Report From Halpern & Branches-Branch of Goldfus/Goldfoot

Halpern & Branches is a DNA group created by Andi Ziegelman and Sandy Aaronson of which we Goldfoot family now belong to.  They used triangulation to arrive at their conclusions as well as ancient family trees.  We have found we connect to Rabbi Samson Wertheimer b: 1658-d: 1724 in Worms, Germany.  He had gone to Vienna in 1684 to join the bank of his uncle, Samuel Oppenheimer, and soon became a court banker.   Rabbi Samson is a relative of RASHI b: 1040 d: 1105 in Troyes, France.  He, in turn, is related to the one and only--King David of Israel.  I am 3rd cousin (concluded by amount of cMs matching and size of segments and number of segments involved in the match) to Andi Ziegelman. 

Goldfoot's Y haplogroup is Q1b1a, now titled as Q-L245 and in 2 months will receive another title after deeper DNA testing. It should show another twig on this branch.
Update 7/6/17:  After taking the Q-L245 test ordered on 4/29/2016, the haplogroup is now called QBZ64.  On the tree it sits between Q-BZ68 and Q-BZ64.    The line it comes from of Y2200 has been found as of July 2017 to originate in 500 CE with our common ancestor.  I would venture a guess that this would have been in the Rhineland, in or around Worms, Germany.   From my timeline (Jews were leaving and going into Europe. This would  be as early as the 400s CE and continuing to arrive there through the 10th century of 900s.  On 640 , 721 and 873 Jews in the Byzantine Empire were forcibly converted to Christianity.  This was the Greek speaking Roman Empire with headquarters in Constantinople alias Istanbul.  It was later a part of the Ottoman Empire. )


Oppenheims descend from a Rabbi Oppenheimer who was from Oppenheim, Germany, and in about 1450, was Rosh Yeshiva in Worms.

We have a few Alps whose Y DNA is Oppenheim DNA – Haplogroup Q.

Note that our matches who carry the haplotype, J1 or J2 are of the Cohens.  J1 is called the Cohen gene, Jews from Aaron and Moses who had the priestly responsibilities and still do.  Many Arabs also carry a branch of the Cohen gene, attesting to them being our cousins; son  Ishmael of Abraham like Isaac was.  .

So far, we have some interesting results.

The G2c haplogroup seems to be most likely to link to the old rabbinic Heilperin family originally from Germany, c. 1500. One man in this group can trace his tree directly back that far, and at least two others with similar surnames match very close to him.

There is another E1b1b1c1a cluster that appears to have originally been from Kurenets, Belarus c. 1700, or even earlier. They may trace to the rabbinic family of this name, since they appear to have gone by "Alper", "Alperovich" and similar names since 1700. Surnames were very uncommon in that time, unless one was from a note family.

There is a small J1 cluster as well, with folks of Austrian, Romanian, and western Ukrainian descent. These folks appear to have had a common origin around 1700, but unlike the E1b1b1c1a case, there is no documentation to prove it.

My own cousin of the Halpern family is J2a4b*, and has no matches in the group. Our family traces to Rabbi Reuven Halpern of Glowno (c. 1760-1816), who was said to have descended from Jehiel Heilperin of Minsk (1660-1746). Some sources say that Jehiel descended from the Heilperins of Germany.  (This is is from Andi Ziegelman, who is my 3rd cousin.  It could be a clue to our origins).  
Some folks also appear to be from Q, and other haplogroups.(Dr. Joseph Halpern is our match and is a Q-M242).  

Clearly, all of these groups can't trace back to the same male along one paternal line, but they might be related to each other via women who passed their famous name onto their husbands and their descendants.

We can conclude that though there is no one clear Halpern clan, there appears to be at least 3 distinct clusters tracing back to about 1700 or even earlier in some cases.
Other folks may be "late adopters" of the surname.a

From Andi:  The roots of your Wertheim-Halpern connection are for sure from Italy. Rabbi Judah ben Meir Ha-Cohen Sir Leontin, the first, who was THE teacher of Rabenu Gershon Light of the Exile, was born in Italy in about 900 CE or so. You and I descend from him.

Update: 7/11/17  My son and I  triangulate with the Wertheimers. This means that we both descend from Samson Wertheimer, or from his father. One of those Wertheimers with whom I triangulate has a tree back to Samson. Another family group with whom you both triangulate descends either from Samson or from his brother.  From Andi.

Goldfoot has East-Asian Ancestry

I have a mother who converted to Judaism whose mother was born in Sweden and father who was an American Yankee with distant roots going back to the ship after the Mayflower of 1620 from England or Wales.

 I have a father whose parents were Ashkenazi Jews from Lithuania and Poland.  I have tested with Family Tree DNA and find I have 3% of my DNA from Asia Minor, meaning Turkey and the area of Georgia and Azerbaijan.  By testing with GedMatch.com, I find my East     Asian genes amount to 0.41%.  Of that, the break-down is Western Mediterranean-11.55%, Eastern Mediterranean-9.78%, Western Asian-2.89%, Middle Eastern-5.18%, South Asian-0.67% and East Asian-0.67%.

Simply put, I have 49% European, 48% Jewish Diaspora and 3% Middle Eastern.  It is that Middle Eastern that I figure is from my Jewish side of Goldfoot and Jermulowske genes, but perhaps not.    Out of my European ancestry, 36% comes from Scandinavia; 8% come from Southern Europe and 5% comes from Eastern Europe.  My 4 grandparents; the Swede, Yankee, Lithuanian and Lithuanian/Poland would have given me each 25% of my genes.

Then I have found that about 1/3 of Caucasians taking the DNA test show some level of East-Asian ancestry and being Jews make up only 0.02% of the world population, they can't all be Jewish!  This East Asian ancestry is a different thing all together.  Some Norwegians are of significant East Asian ancestry because there is an admixture with the Lapps (Sammi) who came to Scandinavia from northern Asia and who share a common heritage with Asian Indians, Northern Chinese, Japanese, Ainu and even American Indians.  I'm guessing now, but I bet its from the Q Y haplogroup (carried by men).  This is interesting.  My Swedish grandfather could have Q haplogroup genes and my father's DNA shows he IS Q1b1a or Q-Y 2200.

There are other groups of people with significant East Asian ancestry that may have contributed to my family tree that include migrations/invasions of nomads through Russia as well as other portions of Eastern Europe and are thought to have brought East Asian gene sequences to Europe. That would show my Jewish heritage of Lithuania and Poland were part of Russia at one time.   Other migrations may not be known at this time and may have an affect on scores!

About half of the South Asian Indians tested have significant East Asian ancestry, though you would never know by appearance.  Just because some of my relatives were born in Europe doesn't mean they were all 100% Indo-European.  European boundaries are political, not biological like the DNA test, and immigration/emigration between Europe and the rest of the world has been happening for thousands of years.

Other researchers at Yale and Stanford have shown considerable East Asian admixture in Eastern European, Russian and Northern European populations.  The Indo-European group covers the populations from Europe to India, including the Middle East.  They are actually fairly similar genetically.  People from these regions often generate similar admixture results.  The further East from Europe a sample originates from, the lower the Indo-European score.  In all the samples tested so far, including samples from the South of India, have Indo-European as the major group in the admix test.

Secondly, these populations are part of a language group termed Indo-European and this is where FTDNA took the label describing this group.  What that means is the languages spoken by modern day populations of these regions are descended from a common root language.  Put together the genetic data and the linguistic anthropological data and it makes sense that they should be grouped together in the test.

My mother's nephew was tested.  His father was my mother's brother.  His mother had German heritage. He is an R1b1a2a1a1b4 Y haplogroup. On FTDNA, Ken's makeup was 98% European and out of that, 51% came from Scandinavia, 23% came from the British Isles, 23% came from Western and Central Europe, and 1% came from Finland and Northern Siberia!  On GedMatch.com,  his East Asian amounts to 0.28%., and Western Mediterranean is 16.78%.  Western Asian is 4.09%.  Eastern Mediterranean is 2.14%, Red Sea is 0.59%, south Asian is 0.73% and Amerindian is 1.55%.   On the R1b haplogroup, the first allele on the test is # 393 which is a 12 and not the usual 13.  I believe this denotes more eastern heritage.  It's not a common result with R1bs.

Goldfoot Q-L245 Y (Q-BZ67) Haplogroup Matches With Autosomal Familyfinder DNA

Goldfoot Q-L245 (now updated to be QBZ67 as of 5/30/16)  Y haplogroup does have matches with the same individuals found in familyfinder.  Evidently it had become Q-YP1003.  After SNP tests, or were the the STR tests of upgrading, the twig of this line have been the QBZ67, BZ64 and BZ68.  I believe these are all Jewish lines.

"Haplogroup Q is the lineage that links Asia and the Americas. This lineage is found in North and Central Asian populations, as well as native Americans. Among European populations, haplogroup Q is most frequently found in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. This lineage is believed to have originated in Central Asia and migrated through the Altai/Baikal region of northern Euras." 

Some of the results are as follows:  All have had the 67 allele Y dna test.  I found that though the original male tester may not have an allele dna match, someone in his family may match with the haplogroup match.

In other words, many of the men who match Nathan Goldfoot's grandson by Q's Y haplogroup, also are found to match him with chromosome segments in the autosomal familyfinder tet from FTDNA.

His test of SNPs has now been upgraded to be called Q-BZ67 as of 5/26/16.    
1. Distance of 7 steps: with Q-M242.  5 people of Goldfoot family-4th cousins, 5th cousins

2. Distance of 7 steps with Q-M378.  sister of Q tested matched

3. Distance of 7 steps with Q-M378  1st cousin on paternal side matched 5th cousin

4. Distance of 7 steps with Q-YP1009 (possibly Romanian origin) sister and 1st cousin matched, 4th cousin

5. Distance of 7 steps with Q-YP1009 sister as 5th cousin and 1st cousin matched 4th cousin

6. Distance of 7 steps with Q-M378  Germany origin, nephew of 1st cousin matched as 5th cousin
                                                               
A few of these above were listed with a distance of 4 steps  before being tested with all 67 alleles.  Then the distance was more-going to 7 steps.    

7.* Latest discovery from Rebekah Canada via project leader,  Janet Akaha,  is that Q-Y2200 is exclusively Ashkenazic Jewish, forming 95% confidence between the years of 1250 BCE and 50 BCE. This comes from results of SNP Pack.

Y2754 branch -if sharing an Oppenheimer surname as early as 1440 CE, all would share an ancestor well before having this surname.  We do match with Oppenheimers.  Oppenheimer is the deepest pedigree in project.

Found was a Goldfoot, with a distance of 3 steps who has the same surname as our Goldfoot.  I was able to trace our grandfather, Nathan Abraham Goldfoot, to Dublin, Ireland where he stayed with a relative  of the newly found Goldfoot. (In 1893 Nathan stayed with Stanley's Goldfoot's parents house in Dublin.  This is where my grandfather, Nathan,  also stayed! The address was 13 Arbutus Place, SCR, Dublin, South, Ireland.) Then he left for Winnipeg, Canada which led eventually to the USA.  Otherwise, none by a distance of 7 shared the same surname.

This branch of the Goldfoot family went from Dublin to South Africa.  Other Q haplogroups are also in South Africa.

It has been found that the branch of people on the human tree called Q-L245 happened 4500 years ago, which would bring us to the year 2484 BCE.   That was before King Saul's days who lived in the 11th century BCE.  Moses, who led the Jews out of Egypt, did so in c1191 BCE.  (He was born in 1391BCE and died at age 120 in 1271 BCE).  That means that Jacob and his family of 70 had entered Egypt in 1591 BCE, so the family of Abraham that had reached the city of Ur, now in Iraq, had started from the East around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers of Mesopotamia back in 2484 BCE, which is logical.

 Q-L245 is a branch off of a more original Q branch, so already by this time it's a pretty old branch.  A more refined branch that our Goldfoot's have found themselves on might be the Q-YP1009 which was  formed 1200 years ago (ybp-years before present) or  the year of 816 CE.  By then, Jews had been entering into Lithuania in the 700s from Germany and France.  Our Goldfoot line came from Telsiai, Lithuania as far as we know, where many Goldfus were found from records that are retrievable.  The time of our most recent common ancestor (the TMRCA) was 650 years ago or the year 1360.  Things were heating up for the Jews by then as the Christian leaders would be expelling them from Spain in 1492, and that would alter the attitudes of all the monarchs against Jews.  .

Ordered Two New SNPS Test for Goldfoot

I was just told that we could order SNPS for $29 each so I ordered 2 of them just now; the L245 and the L272 that are advised for our Q1b branch on the tree. (I've since read that L272 is rare, so we may not reflect this SNP.  )

This is getting very technical, but up to this point I had found out that our place on the tree was a Q1b branch with the SNP's of P36.2+M378+.  These two new ones may or may not apply to us, so I have to find out. They're the ones we should take.  What if it shows nothing?  What will it show? 

I read in my dna book that there are SNPs on every chromosome and there are 10 million of them in nuclear DNA.  They account for 90% of the genetic variation in humans.  The Y SNPs used for genetic genealogy are not the only ones on the Y-chromosome, either.  They just are the ones used by population geneticists and genetic genealogists.  A SNP is also known as a polymorphism.  it is possible that the same alteration is in less than 1% of another population and then is considered to be a mutation.  What's being tested are SNPs used in genetic genealogy.    They give information in finding the origins and migration patterns of indigenous peoples. but is only an indicator of the development of present populations.  What must be done is to correlate theories of population development based on SNPs with archeological and anthropological evidence   SNPs are markers with 2 values.  They have mutated only once in human history.  Each SNP can be traced to a single common ancestor where it first appeared. 

The earliest SNPs can be traced to a Y chromosome Adam who lived between 60,000 and 90,000 years ago and a Mitochondrial Eve who lived about 150,000 years ago.  These are the only ones who have survived to the present day, but we know there had been others who didn't. . 

What's interesting to me is that haplogroup Q is found most frequently in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, having originated in Central Asia and migrated through the Altai/Baikai region of northern Eurasia into the Americas.  This is referring to the native Americans who are a Q3, as I remember.  Q1b's were found mostly in Eastern Europe.  I don't know what my mother's Swedish grandfather would have been, but it would be something if he were also a Q.   Now I"m excited about getting the results of this test.
